Consent and boundaries in an online conversation
Create space for clear answers, privacy and a change of mind.
Ask before changing the subject
An initial conversation does not automatically invite private questions or intimate images. Check whether the other person wants to discuss a more personal topic, and accept their answer. An agreement to one topic does not extend to another. If a response is unclear, pause and ask rather than interpreting uncertainty as permission.
State boundaries in plain language
You can explain what you do not want to discuss without giving a personal history or defending your reasons. A boundary can concern language, photographs, contact outside the platform or plans to meet. Listen when the other person sets a limit, and avoid bargaining, guilt or repeated requests.
Respect a change of mind
Consent is specific and reversible. Someone can stop an exchange after previously participating, and the same applies to you. A respectful response makes stopping easy. If a conversation feels pressuring, use the available blocking or reporting tools and take a break if needed. Do not create another account to bypass a block.
